Campgrounds and Camping Gear

Campgrounds

Camping is a great pastime that has a long tradition behind it. Today’s campers have more options than ever before, and the list keeps on growing. That’s why it’s important to have your facts straight when you shop for camping gear. Do you know what the thermal rating for a sleeping bag means, or what the number of people a tent claims to sleep actually translates into in terms of storage space? If not, this is the place for you. Here at campground-directory.com we aim to keep you armed with the most up to date information available on all things camping. Check back often, and please send us an email if you have any questions.

Camping started out as a means of survival. In the hunter gatherer stages of our history as a species, we needed to be mobile enough to follow herds of prey. We also needed to be able to adapt to a range of climates and weather that the herds we followed traveled through. So we made tents, or the first types of manmade shelter.

Long after the necessity for pitching a tent has ceased to exist, we still find ourselves drawn to camping. Why do you suppose that is? Some scientists hypothesize it is an instinctive ancestral drive to conquer the wilderness. I say it’s something much simpler. In fact, simplicity is at the heart of why we camp. In today’s world we are often expected to be connected constantly. Whether it’s email coming into our blackberry or twitter feeds popping up on an iphone, we are bombarded with the presence of the rest of the world.

Camping is an escape from that. City dwellers don’t realize how noisy the city is until they go out into the wilderness to camp. Then, at night, they can truly hear silence, and it is one of the most profoundly peaceful experiences a person can have. Camping also takes a camper off grid. The cell phone stops ringing, the emails stop coming, and a person can really ground themselves in the here and now. That’s an ability that many don’t realize they need, even while they are deprived of it.

And of course, camping is fun. Whether you enjoy hiking the trails in the mountains and woods, or you just enjoy telling stories around a campfire; camping has a little something for just about anyone. You can visit lakes and rivers to go boating, rafting, or kayaking. You can backpack so far from civilization that the only sign of it you’ll see is the occasional glow of a plane flying overhead, so far off that there isn’t even a sound, just a light passing through the heavens.

One of the best aspects of camping is that it allows you to decide which aspects of modern life to leave behind. If you’re just looking to leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind, but you still want a bed, three warm meals, and to be able to watch a few movies, then you want to try RV camping. If you’d prefer to live as if electricity hadn’t been harnessed by man, well then you can backpack out into the wild and sleep on a rock. Either way, the choice is entirely yours.
